People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Sonny & Jennifer Marshall treated us to a gift certificate for a Boar's Head Balloon ride. When we scheduled our flight, we asked them if they wanted to join us and we all met at the Boar's Head Inn at 7:00 a.m. on October 21, 2001 (Sunrise that day was officially 6:30 a.m. so it was still dark during flight preparations). We had a GREAT day of ballooning and fellowship, topped off by a super Sunday brunch at the Boar's Head Inn afterwards.

We flew with Bear Balloon Corporation President & Chief Pilot, Rick Behr, and four other people, making a total of nine of us in our basket. Our sister balloon took off with us and it had four people and a pilot in a smaller basket. (This is the balloon we flew in so if you see the head of a boar that would be our sister balloon)

Click on a thumb nail in the table below to view the larger version of that photo and then use your browser's back button to return to this gallery. I didn't put captions on all of the photos since they are really self explanatory. There are 123 photos here, most of which I shot using our Nikon CoolPix 990 digital camera. Some were shot by the chase drivers and given to us after the flight. Jennifer also took a bunch of photos using her 35mm camera and gave us copies of the prints. I'll be scanning many of these and adding them to this gallery as soon as I have an opportunity.

Looking inside of balloon as it is being inflated

We're getting there ...

Still being inflated ...

Looking across basket into balloon

Still inflating - hang on there, Sonny..!

Sister balloon now getting some hot air shot to it

Sister balloon starts to sit upright

Our basket is still on its side while hot air is beginning to fill our sister balloon

Now our balloon gets a shot of hot air from the LP burners

Now our balloon is really coming up...!

Both balloons sitting up and getting ready to take off

A view into the pilot's space showing the LP bottles and navigation equipment

Cutting fire into the beast

We're up! Looking back down on our sister balloon

The sun is just coming up as we take off

Looking down at the launch area grass

Looking across the top of Sonny's head at the pond at Boar's Head and the beautiful foliage

The sun is shining through our sister balloon as we rise together

Looking out at the early morning mist rising from the pond and foliage

Looking down on one of the chase vehicles

Looking down on the launch area

Beautiful shot looking down on the pond at Boar's Head

Sunrise as viewed from the balloon just after we took off

Looking down at our sister balloon

Passing over Charlottesville homes

Morning mist rising from the countryside as we look off toward the Blue Ridge mountains

Another scenic view

Sister balloon gains altitude

More pretty countryside

A competitor's balloon can be seen off in the distance

Soaring over the inhabitants

Another pretty shot

Another scenic view

Ain't this stuff maarrvvelous...?

Looking out from inside the basket

Sister balloon drifts away a bit

The early morning launch gave us a neat perspective of the morning fog lifting

Yet another view

There's sister again

Another shot of sister

Looking down on Charlottesville as we meander over toward Route 29 North

Shopping centers, don't you know ...

Looking down on what appears to be two bad spots in the roof at Rio Hill

Close up of the two bad spots

Looking South along Route 29

Looking North up Route 29

The morning fog seems to be following the Rivanna River

Wal-Mart & Sam's Club

Here's the Double Tree Inn

Drifting over the Rivanna River looking for our reflection

We're starting to see our reflection now

There we are ...!

Sonny's having fun ...!

Now we're going down below the trees to swoop along the river just above the water

Ain't this neat ...?

Looking over the basket at our reflection in the river

This was a special part of the flight

See how far below the tree tops we are ...?

When we came back up from the river bottom we actually clipped the top of a tree before we gained altitude

The sun played games with us as we watched our shadow and the shadow of our sister balloon

We think this is a soccer field under construction and our pilot wanted to try to land here, but the chase vehicles couldn't get in

There's one of the chase vehicles now ...

Here's the chase vehicle we came back on (driven by retired UPS driver, Jack)

Both chase vehicles have caught up with us (temporarily)

I aimed the camera straight up into the balloon while we were flying and this is what I saw

Okay, Jennifer, go ahead and ham it up ...!!

Neat shot of the two balloon shadows

Here's a good shot of our shadow.

Making preparations to land
